I recently had the opportunity to visit this wildlife sanctuary with fellow photographer, Franklin Green. We discovered how challenging it is to capture images of birds, particularly in flight. It's not just a matter of a fast shutter speed, you also need to be quick on your response time. I shot many a picture of the tail end of a bird escaping the frame!
These plumes were in such demand for women's hats near the end of the nineteenth century that these gorgeous birds were nearly hunted to extinction.
We have liftoff! This was the best bird-in-flight-photo I could manage.
The Great Blue Herons are impressive looking birds. They are the second largest birds in the US. Only the condor is larger. We enjoyed watching this pair as the male would go off in search of the perfect stick and bring it back for the female to weave into the nest.
